Abstract
731,054. Generating combustion products under pressure. NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL. May 13, 1952 [May 31, 1951], No. 12152/52. Class 51 (1). In a gas turbine engine combustion chamber having a flame tube 6 formed of thin sheet material, the upstream end of the flame tube is formed with a plurality of air inlet openings 4 disposed around the fuel nozzle 1 and axially disposed tubular inserts 11 are disposed in the air inlet openings. The inserts are substantially longer than the thickness of the flame tube wall but do not extend appreciably into the flame tube. Each stream of primary air issuing through the inserts has a cross-section which is equal to that of the inner end of the insert and build-up of carbon deposit is confined to an annular zone surrounding the air stream. Examples of the tubular inserts are shown in Figs. 5A, 5B, 5C, 5D. Suitable dimensions are given.
