Abstract
779,904. Silencers for gaseous currents. VOKES, Ltd. Aug. 19, 1955 [Sept. 9, 1954], No. 26184/54. Class 7 (2). A tube leading into a low pressure chamber A is formed as a venturi whereby the velocity of the gases is increased within the tube, and is provided with one or more slots 13 in the wall thereof giving access to at least one chamber B of dimensions smaller than those of the chamber A. The air-intake silencer shown in Fig. 1, comprises a cylindrical casing 1 provided at one end with a curvilinear inlet passage 3 concentric with the inlet tube having a parallel-sided section 4 and terminating in a flared outlet section 5; a bridge-piece 6 spans the mouth of the tube and carries an end cap 9 which locates a crimped, cylindrical air filter 10. The diameter of the section 4 of the inlet tube is about one quarter of that of the casing 1. Chambers B, C formed by annular baffles 15, 16 communicate with the inlet tube by way of slots 13, 14. In a modification, an exhaust silencer comprises a cylindrical casing 21, Fig. 2, and an internal foraminous tube 26 between the inlet 22 and the outlet 24 of the casing, the inlet being formed with a convergent section from the outlet end of which the tube 26 is of substantially constant cross-section and equal to that of a tail pipe 27. The latter terminates in a narrowangle diffuser 32 surrounded by a chamber M, or chambers, to tune out the fundamental or selected harmonics of the resonant frequency of the tail pipe 27. Within the annular space between the casing 21 and the tube 26 is a divergent/convergent conical baffle 28 the interior of which is divided by annular baffles 29, 30, and 31 into two pairs of chambers E, K and F, L of different acoustic capacities; two further chambers G, H are provided between the baffle 28 and the casing 21.
