Abstract
776,775. Motor vehicles. SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd. March 3, 1955 [Feb. 26, 1954], No. 6297/55. Divided out of 776,774. Classes 79(2), 79(3) and 79(4). In a motor vehicle having two rear axle assemblies each comprising two axles 13, 14 and each axle being driven by an independent propeller shaft, the drive is transmitted from two engines 1, 2 which are coupled by hydrokinetic couplings 3, 4 to variable speed gears 5, 6 each gear driving through a separate gear train 7 or 8 the propeller shafts on the associated side of the vehicle. As shown the gear trains 7, 8 are disposed in a common casing, and are connectable by a clutch 38. Each train drives a three-part propeller shaft 9 and a one-part propeller shaft 10. The inboard wheels 17 of the axles are removable through a trapdoor provided in the vehicle. The casing of each axle carries a member 22 which is pivoted at its forward end to a member fixed to the vehicle frame. A longitudinal balance beam interconnects adjacent pairs of wheels and is universally jointed to a frame member. Increased manoeuvrability is obtained for the vehicle by biasing the throttle opening on one engine relatively to the other with the gear trains 7, 8 disconnected. As shown, a cab 37 extends entirely across the forward end of the vehicle. In a modification the cab is replaced by two separate cabs with a bonnet disposed between them.
