776,698. Making electrical connections; jointing by stamping; curling. AMP, Inc., [formerly AIRCRAFT-MARINE PRODUCTS Inc.]. May 24, 1955 [May 24, 1954], No. 14940/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] A connector, which may be of the axial or flag type having a resilient blade-receiving portion 1, Fig. 1, or a ring or spade tongue, a wiregripping ferrule 3 and an insulation-gripping ferrule 6, is formed from a blank as shown in Fig. 2. The ferrules are formed from tongues 8, 9 respectively, the end 10 of tongue 8 being passed through a slot 11 and locked by tabs 15, 16 folded down on to it. Fig. 8 shows dies 23, 26 for forming the ferrules. The blank rests on the lower die 26 and the upper die 23 has parallel, arcuate surfaces 24, 25 for curling the tongues 8, 9. When the dies are in engagement continued movement of the upper one presses die 26 downwards against springs 32 thereby causing a stationary indentor 27 located in a passage 31 in die 26 to engage the base of the connector across the tabs 15, 16 and indent it into the wire as shown in Fig. 6. A modified tongue-locking arrangement is shown in Fig. 11. In this case the end 10a of the tongue 8a has a notch which is caused by upper die 23a to engage a detent 40 on the edge of a slot formed by striking out a bowed tongue 38. During the indenting operation a stationary member 41 straightens the tongue 38 thereby locking the notch and detent in engagement. Fig. 14 shows a further locking arrangement wherein the end 10b of the tongue is bent to lie along the base of the connector after passing through slot 11b and is locked by striking a tab 45 down into the tongue from the base. The final indenting of the ferrule into the wire is preferably performed at the top of the ferrule.
