Abstract

813,160. Making electrical components. AMP Inc. Aug. 16, 1957 [Aug. 16, 1956], No. 25957/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] Jointing by stamping; cupping.-The ferrule forming portion 8 of a crimpable connector, e.g. a clip connector for receiving a blade, is formed with transverse external ribs 24 and associated internal depressions 26 bounded on both sides by areas of cold, work-hardened metal produced during the formation of the ribs and depressions by dies 28 and 30, Fig. 5, having projections 32 and recesses 34 respectively. When the connector is crimped on to a wire 14, Fig. 7, by dies 40 and 42, Fig. 8, the material of the wire is forced into the depressions and the external ribs 24 may be flattened as shown, or the crimping dies 40<SP>1</SP>, 42<SP>1</SP>, Figs. 11 and 12, may be formed with relieved portions 28 and 50 respectively for the reception of the ribs which then remain upstanding (Figs. 9 and 10, not shown). The connectors are produced from a metal strip by progressive die-forming operations, each connector being joined to the next adjacent connector by a plug 4 as shown in Fig. 6.
