Abstract
776,514. Centrifugal pumps. AMERICANMARSH PUMPS (CANADA), Ltd. Sept. 20, 1955 [July 20, 1955], No. 26882/55. Class 110 (1). A pump is primed by applying a vacuum to it by a connection to the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine until a part of the required vacuum is obtained, the remainder of the vacuum being obtained by the application of a further source of suction. A centrifugal pump is connected at 6 to a float chamber 4 through a valve 5. The float chamber 4 is connected through a valve 3 and a check valve 2 to a vacuum line 12 connected to the intake manifold of the internal combustion engine which drives the pump. A vacuum pump 8 is connected by a pipe 7 to a point between the valve 3 and check valve 2. When a vacuum of 5 inches mercury is reached in the line 12, check valve 2 opens to permit air to be withdrawn by the engine intake manifold. When a handle 10 is pulled, valves 3 and 5 are opened and a switch 11 is closed to energize the driving motor 9 of the vacuum pump 8, which then assists the engine in priming the centrifugal pump. When the vacuum reaches the maximum vacuum of the engine, about 15 to 16 inches mercury, the check valve 2 closes, and the small remaining quantity of air is removed by the vacuum pump 8 alone until the vacuum exceeds 25 inches mercury. The float chamber 4 prevents water from entering the vacuum pump 8 on completion of priming.
