Abstract

1,137,992. Exhaust silencers; centrifugal pumps. ERNST HEINKEL A.G. May 31, 1966 [June 24, 1965], No.24142/66. Headings F1B and F1C. A water pumping apparatus, driven by an I. C. engine 2 has an exhaust gas operated ejector device 11 connected to the pump inlet 13 to support the pump suction, the ejector 11 being connected to the inlet chamber of the silencer 5 and being completely separate from the normal outlet pipe 7 of the silencer which is closable by a valve 8. At starting the pump outlet valve 14 and the valve 8 are closed and a valve 15 in the connection 12 to ejector 11 opened. The exhaust gases from the silencer inlet chamber 4 discharge through the ejector 11 and the suction created helps to prime pump 14. The valve 8 is held closed by a spring- loaded catch 10. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) a non-return valve (17) is provided adjacent the valve 15 and the latter is coupled by linkage to a slide valve (16) in the silencer outlet 7.
