Class 39(3) In a tubular heater comprising a helical electric resistance surrounded by compressed insulating material within a metal tube, the ratio of surface area of the radiator tube to the surface area of the heating resistance is at least 3 : 1 and the compression of the insulating material is at least 2.9 gm/cm<SP>3</SP>. The thickness of the insulation between the inner surface of the metal tube and the resistance is at least 0.8 mm. per kilovolt of test voltage. Melting magnesite may be used for insulation. The diameter of the heater may be less than 7 mm. and the resistance may be wound on a former of thickness equal to the diameter of the wire. The heater may be formed into spirals of small diameter operating at mains voltage or 42 volts.
