[Also in Group XXII] The heater comprises a metal tube or sheath in which a metal resistance wire 13 or strip, preferably coiled, is embedded in powdered insulating material, which is compacted by pressing the heater between dies in two stages, the first of which leaves the major part 12 of the sheath with substantially the same circular shape of internal cross section and forms the sheath with one or more longitudinal ribs 10 containing insulation. In the second stage the element is compressed between two dies 22, 24 which may be flat or formed with a shallow elliptical recess and deform one or both of the parts 12 still of circular cross section, whereby the sheath is flattened and the powder is uniformly compacted. Between the two pressing stages, the element may be bent to a U for an immersion heater or to a spiral for a hot-plate. Thus dies 22, 24 may be used in the final compacting of a hot-plate. The preliminary pressing may be carried out substantially as in Specification 592,124 and may be in several steps, so the parts 12 remain circular, but of decreasing radius. The helical resistance wire substantially retains its shape.
