Abstract
A sheathed electric heater 22, e.g. for use as an engine glow plug, is formed from a closed end metal sheath 24 having a centred electric heating element 30. A small amount of sinterable metal powder 32 is added to the sheath to cover the end 31 of the heating element at the closed end of the sheath and the remaining volume around the element is filled with granular electrical insulating material 42. The assembly is swaged using dies 44 to reduce its diameter, extend its length and compact the insulation and metal powder. The metal powder is sintered by passing electric current through the element to provide a low resistance electrical connection between the heating coil and the closed end of the sheath. The metal powder may be nickel and the insulating material is preferably magnesium oxide. The sheath and heating element are made of nickel alloy. <IMAGE>
