Abstract

1,127,454. Electrically heated starting aids. C.A.V. Ltd. Sept 15, 1966 [Oct. 11, 1965], No.43014/65. Heading F1B. A starting aid for an internal-combustion engine comprises in combination an electrical heating element 13 and a resistance element 16 through which electrical current can flow to the heating element, the resistance element exhibiting a substantial increase in resistance with rising temperature so that when the aid is connected to a source of electrical supply the initial flow of current through the heating element will be high so as to achieve rapid heating of the heating element and as the resistance element heats up due to the flow of current therethrough, the increasing resistance of the resistance element will act to reduce the flow of current through the heating element thereby preventing overheating of the heating element. As shown the heating element 13 is spirally wound and formed from an alloy tape. It could be helically wound from either tape or wire. The coating, insulating the turns could be. a phosphate. The resistance element may be surrounded by electrical insulating material which serve to increase the thermal inertia thereof the resistance element and the heating element may be formed from nickel/iron and iron/chromium/ aluminium alloys respectively. In a modification the resistance element and the heating element are located within a tubular member which is secured within the body part.
