Abstract

784,428. Electric heating elements. BRITTSH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd. March 12, 1956 [March 21, 1955], No. 8173/55. Class 39(3) A heating element comprises a helically wound resistance wire whose internal coil diameter is in excess of the diameter of a flexible insulating sleeve on which the coiled wire is supported, the sleeve being itself supported on a metal rod, tube or like member. In Fig. 1, an element 4 has been threaded over a sleeve 6 which may be of glass fibre or asbestos, one end of the element being attached to a metal rod 1 and the other to a terminal 5 which is clamped on, but insulated from, the rod 1. A second terminal 2 is in contact with the rod 1 which forms a conductor. Both terminals 2a, 5 in the construction shown in Fig. 3 are insulated from the metal rod which thus forms a support only. Additional insulation, e.g. vitreous enamelling, may be provided on the rod. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the assembly is in the form of a spiral. The construction permits free passage of air across the surface of the heating element.
