Abstract

1,058,496. Making electric conductors. ROSEMOUNT ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Aug. 23, 1965 [Nov. 2, 1964], No. 44621/64. Heading B3A. [Also in Division H5] A method of making an electrical conducting device having parts of varying resistance per unit length comprises the steps of fitting an inner tube of electrically conducting material on to an electrically conducting wire, surrounding the tube and wire with an insulating sleeve and fitting an outer metal tube around the sleeve. A heater made according to the invention comprises a nickel chromium alloy wire, which may be silver plated, over portions of which are fitted nickel tubes which are drawn down on to the wire, cold welding with it. A sleeve of braided or woven silica fibre is then fitted, and an outer protective metal tube is drawn down on to the assembly to produce a heating element of constant outside diameter and which becomes heated along parts only of its length. Such a heater may be used for heating corrosive fluids, in the presence of high levels of nuclear radiation or vibration, for the air intake of an aircraft engine, or for heating a Pitot tube. Where several heating circuits are required in a single cover more than one assembly of wire, inner tube and insulating sleeve may be fitted inside a single outer protective tube.
