[Class 37] A resistor comprises a resistance element of wire, formed of a material having a suitable temperature coefficient of resistance, and which is surrounded by a heating coil, sections of wire formed of material of low heat conductivity being inserted between the ends of the element and the current leads in abutting relationship. The resistance element 1 may consist of a silver wire which has been subjected to an atmosphere of sulphur, followed by heat treatment. The lead wires 2, 3 may be of copper and between the ends of these wires and the element 1 there are inserted short pieces of wire 4, 5 of material, such as copper and nickel alloy having a high resistance to the conduction of heat. Butt joints are formed between the adjacent members which are then welded together, and the wire 1 may be sulphurized subsequently to this, parts of the unit which are not to be treated with sulphur being protected by a suitable coating. An insulating member 6 of glass surrounds the resistance element and a heating coil 8 is wound round the glass for controlling the temperature and hence the resistance of the element. The member 6 may be a capillary tube, the ends of which extend beyond the element I and are sealed. The complete unit is then mounted in an evacuated vessel. The resistance of the element 1 is formed to vary smoothly with temperature over wide ranges.
