Abstract
585,407. Temperature variable resistors. EDISON, Inc., T.A. May 16, 1944, No. 9374. Convention date, July 8, 1943. [Class 37] The resistor element of a resistance bulb (thermometer) extends lengthwise of its casing, has a cross-sectional shape such that a considerable portion of its surface is at a relatively substantial distance from the casing wall, and is secured to heat conducting means thermally associated therewith and adapted to contact the casing wall and slide against this wall on insertion or removal of the element from the casing. As shown the resistor element comprises a flat strip core 8 preferably of laminated mica on which the resistance wire 10 e.g. of pure nickel is wound under tension, so that it indents and becomes embedded in the edges of the core. A rivet 11 secures to the lower ends of the core laminations, preferably two in number, electrically insulating strips 26, e.g., of mica and resilient heat conducting members 25, e.g., of silver. The members 25 have a flat central portion 25a, and arcuate side fins 25b so dimensioned that when the resistance element is slid into the metal casing 6 the fins 25b are strained so that the members 25 resiliently hold the resistance strip in position Fig. 6 (not shown). The casing 6 is also made of high conductivity metal, e.g., stainless steel containing 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent. nickel so that heat is readily conducted through the case 6 and metal members 25 to the resistance unit. The core 8 is secured at its top end to cylindrical plug 13 made, e.g. of " Isolantite " (Registered Trade Mark) by lugs 15a of two metal members 15 welded to the lower ends of terminal pins 14 glass-sealed into the plug 13. The lead 10a of the resistance wire 10 passes, between the laminations of core 8 and through a hole 17 to a lug 15b of one of the members 15. The other lead 10b passes through a hole 19 in the core 8, to a terminal 20, the usual adjusting coil 18 of glass fibre insulated wire of substantially zero resistance temperature coefficient, e.g. of constantin being connected in series with terminal 20 and the other member 15. The coil 18 may be bent to U form having its ends projecting through holes 22 in the core 8. The resistance unit is held within the casing 6, secured, e.g. by silver soldering to a base member 1, by a sleeve 23, soft metal washers 24 being interposed between the flange 13a on the plug 13 and the engaging surfaces of the base 1 and sleeve 23 to seal the bulb hermetically. The Specification gives dimensions and conductivities for the resistance wire 10, resilient members 25 and the casing 6. U.S.A. Specification 2,307,626 is referred to.
