A two-for-one yarn twisting apparatus comprises in combination a wrap-around thread storage disc so constructed that, through at least a portion of the length of the yarn engaging surface of the storage device, the radial distance of said surface from the axis of rotation increases with angular distances from the point where the radial yarn path intersects the surface, and an adjustable yarn tensioner with readily accessible manipulative means for imparting a selected tension to an end of yarn passing to the wrap-around storage disc. In the arrangement shown a yarn fly package support 36 is carried by ball bearing 34 on the upstanding tubular extension 32 from the whorl 28. The primary yarn tensioning device 62 comprises coacting stationary and movable elements between which the yarn is drawn. The stationary elements are in the form of a plurality of rods or pins 64 and the movable elements comprise a plurality of spaced bars 66 arranged on a movable arm 68. The lower end of arm 68 is forked and it is supported by knife edges on a plug 92. The arm 68 is acted upon by a leaf spring 84 and has a handle 94 for moving the movable elements away from the fixed elements. The upper end of arm 68 may also be provided with a tension plate 96 which coacts with a similar plate 98 resiliently and slidably mounted for movement in a horizontal direction. A pretensioning device consisting of a ring 52 having inwardly projecting bristles 54 with which the yarn coming from the package engages is also provided. The tensioning device 62 may be arranged such that the force of the spring 84 acting on the arm 68 may decrease as the tensioning elements 66 and 64 are forced in the direction of separation. The upper end of the whorl 28 has a sleeve extension 110 to which is secured a flyer hub 112 on which is mounted a cup like flyer 114. The lower portion of the hub 112 is provided with a continuous groove 116, spiral like in part, which serves as a yarn storage device. The yarn supply package support 36 is held against rotation by means of a magnetic stabilizer consisting of a magnet 142 mounted in a support 138 which has limited rocking movement about a pin 140 on bracket 136. The magnet 142 co-operates with a steel insert 148 on the support 36 to maintain the support against rotation. The upper portion of the member 138 has an arcuate surface 150 carrying a strip of resilient material to serve as a brake surface. The mass of the support member 138 and the magnet 142 is so arranged about the pin 140 that when the attraction between the magnet and the steel insert 148 is removed by rotation of the support 36 the member 138 will rotate about pin 140 in a counter clockwise direction to bring the brake surface 152 into contact with the side of the support 36 to arrest the rotation thereof. Yarn severing and holding means are provided at the outlet from the spindle to prevent yarn being continuously fed from the spindle after breakage.
