Abstract

[Also in Group VI] Stubs, i.e. rod-like articles such as cigarette hollow mouthpieces and/or filter tips of tobacco or other material, are transferred positively as described below from a constant-speed-fluted disc assembly 1, carrying three double-length stubs in each flute, to a variable-speed fluted drum 3 whose mean peripheral speed is thrice that of the assembly 1, the positive transference means and a stepped guide 4 distributing stubs in staggered formation, as shown in Fig. 4, simultaneously into three successive flutes of the drum 3, which is driven by a device such as that of Specification 703,991, [Group VI), so as almost to stop each time it has turned one flute pitch and is appropriately positioned for stub transference. Sextuple-length stubs are fed to the assembly 1 and are divided thereon by circular knives into the double-length stubs. Air jets 34, 35, align the stubs at one side of the drum 3, according to the Provisional Specification for transfer therefrom by the " stub-wheel " of Specification 709,197, [Group VI), into spaces between tobacco lengths in a continuous-rod cigarette machine. A shield 30 coacting with the drum 3 may be swung away therefrom about a hinge 32 against the pull of a spring 34<SP>1</SP>. Stub transference is effected under the control of bellcranks 15 pivoted on arms 8 ... 10 extending appropriately between individual discs of the assembly 1 from a support block 22 secured by clamps 23 to machine side plates 24. Springs 21 urge the bell-cranks 15 to retain stubs, clearing the guide 4 frictionally in the flutes of the assembly 1 until cam-actuated levers 28, through slots in which the bell-cranks 15 work, descend and effect stub transference by means of ends having lower surfaces arcuately curved to follow the periphery of the drum 3. In the Provisional Specification, the bell-cranks 15 act on the stubs via leaf-springs.
