Abstract

769,907. Electromagnets. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Dec. 9, 1955 [Dec. 20, 1954], No. 35406/55. Class 35. A plunger-type electromagnet having a winding 11 and armature 15 is sealed against dust &c. by means of flexible diaphragms 19 secured to each end of the armature and coil, and serving also to locate the armature. The coil is wound on a moulded spool 13 having an annular flange 17 at each end round which the flange 21 of the cap 19 fits. The armature is secured to the cap by screws 23, the heads of the screws and the base of the armature or non-magnetic washer 27 against which they grip the diaphragm being rounded. The armature is gravity returned. In a modification, the flanges 17 of the caps are located inside the flanges 21 and are slotted to locate the tips of a cruciform spring at each end. Alternatively, the caps may be secured by their edges resting in slots inside the coil flange, and may be stiffened by incorporating disc springs. In a further form, the caps are clamped by screwed plates and separate flat springs inside the enclosure are used.
