Abstract

A reciprocating piston compressor is resiliently mounted in a housing 17 by springs 20, 21 resilient in the direction of the reciprocating movement but rigid in directions perpendicular to that direction. Each spring 20, 21 is in the form of an arcuately slotted diaphragm, Fig.2, or a corrugated diaphragm, Fig. 3 (not shown), fixed at the periphery to the housing 17 and at the centre to studs 18, 19 carried by the compressor. Alternatively each spring may be a flat rectangular plate or a generally U-shaped leaf spring having the longer limb fixed to the housing 17 and the shorter limb fixed to the compressor. The compressor piston 8 is urged by springs 13, 14 to a mid position and is reciprocated by an A.C. energized coil disposed in an annular air gap defined by a permanent magnet core 1 and a cylindrical member 27.
