Abstract
769,151. Valves. SMITH, W. May 10, 1955, No. 13462/55. Class 135. [Also in Group XIII] An automatic and intermittently-operating boiler blow-down valve comprises a plunger 15 controlling a sludge port 20, a cleaning pin 29 on the plunger co-operating with an orifice plate 24, a rubber diaphragm 13 connected to the plunger and urged downwardly by a spring 30 and a spring-loaded pressure release valve 34 cooperable with a boss 39 to control ports 37 leading to a discharge pipe 38. Water from the discharge side of the boiler feed pump supplied directly to the underside of the diaphragm and indirectly through a restricted orifice 33 to its upper side initially raises the diaphragm to open the sludge port 20 and close the ports 37. Water pressure then builds up above the diaphragm and together with the spring 30 eventually overcomes the pressure beneath the diaphragm to lower the diaphragm to close the sludge port 20 and open the ports 37 to allow the water above the diaphragm to escape to sump and the next cycle of operations to commence. The plate 24 may be interchanged with similar plates having orifices of various sizes.
