Abstract

231,760. Martin, W. Sept. 30, 1924. Valves actuated by fluid under control of auxiliary pilot valve; dirt and other deleterious matter, removing; blow-dowm apparatus. - A valve for discharging sludge or the like from boilers is provided with an inverted cap enclosing a chamber to which cleaning fluid is supplied. A discharge dome 1 carries a cylinder 2 enclosed by another cylinder 3 forming a piston chamber 4 to which compressed air may be supplied by a pipe C. The cylinder 3 carries the stem 5 and valve 6. A cap 7 is pressed downwards by a volute spring 8 which also acts as a conduit through which steam from a pipe 9 reaches the chamber 10. The air supply through the pipe C is controlled by a valve in the driver's cabin, so that when admitted to the chamber 4 the valve 6 is first lifted, and then the cap 7 to discharge sludge. On the downward movement of the valve 6, the cap 7 closes first, and steam passes out through the seatings to clean them and allow a tight closure. The discharge passage between the parts 1, 3 gradually widens to silence the discharge and prevent splashing.
