Abstract

672,458. Electrostatic precipitation. METALLGES, AKT.-GES. May 23, 1950 (Aug. 12, 1949], No. 12941/50. Class 39 (i). [Also in Groups XII and XXIX] An electrofilter, which comprises a chamber 14, Fig. 1, containing electrodes 13 and having an inlet 16 for dust- or moisture-laden gas at superatmospheric pressure, an outlet 17 for purified gas and sprayers 15 for periodically washing the electrodes, has a gas-tight liquid seal drain valve comprising a conical valve 22 controlled by a float 21 in a liquid outlet at the lower end 19 of the chamber, the liquid passing through the outlet forming the seal. During normal operation of the filter, the float 21 is lifted by liquid 18, Fig. 3, extracted from the gas and opens the valve 22. Periodical spraying forms liquid more quickly and the lift of the float is such that after the valve 22 is opened, a stop 28 on the valve stem 28<SP>1</SP> lifts the valve seat 23 to give a larger outlet opening. To prevent sticking the valves 22, 23 may be opened by a lever 31. In a modification, a single valve is operated by a float. In a further embodiment the float and valve housing are separate from the vessel to which the housing is connected by an inclined tube preventing dirt from reaching the valve. The housing may be cleaned by fresh water admitted through a side pipe.
