July 31, 1939, No. 22158 [Class 55 (i)] Blast gases from a generator a pass through a pipe f and enlarged extension f<SP>1</SP> provided with water sprays k and terminating in a vessel g containing water in which dust is trapped, the cooled and cleaned gases escaping through a stack h. The sediment-containing water is expelled periodically by an increase in pressure during the gas-making period through a conduit l leading to a down pipe m extending into a water seal n having a sloping side n' adjacent to a channel n<SP>2</SP>. The top of conduit l is open by pipe o to atmosphere during the run, so that increase in pressure in the vessel g provides the sediment-discharging impulse. Pipe o is connected by valve q with pipe p open to the gas space in vessel g during the blow, and when sediment is being forced out of the seal pot n. A partition r extends across the vessel g and reaches below the liquid, and forms a compartment s vented to the atmosphere through a pipe t which compartment retains a proportion of the water during the run for return to the general water level when the gas-making pressure is relieved, and preventing unnecessary overflow under the impulse of gas-making pressure. Uprun water-gas passes through vessel g, the lower part of pipe h, a pipe j and a washer c. The generator is also connected by a pipe b direct to washer c.
