Abstract
652,659. Gas cleaners. HARRIS, C. S, and GOLD B. May 27, 1948, No. 14358. [Class 8(ii)] [Also in Group XIII] A gas cleaner comprises an expansion chamber 1 having an inlet pipe 2 of relatively small diameter extending more than half the axial length of the chamber, a clean gas outlet 4 at the upper end, a baffle plate 8 spaced below the open end 3 of the inlet pipe 2 to deflect descending gas upwardly and a second baffle plate 6 located above the plate 8 so as to divide the part of the chamber 1 between its upper end and the plate 8 into upper and lower portions; the latter being shorter than the former and the plate 6 being so arranged as to have a restricted flow passage 7 through which substantially clean gas flows into the upper portion of the chamber where it deposits any remaining entrained solid or liquid particles whilst rising slowly and without hindrance to the outlet 4. An aperture 10 in axial alignment with the open end 3 creates turbulence in the gas stream striking the plate 8 which assists deposition.
