In a gas washer in which the gas flows upwardly through a tortuous passage formed in a casing by spaced, overlapping baffles which extend inwards and downwards from opposite walls, whilst washing liquid cascades off the free lower edge of each baffle on to the next below, each baffle has a number of thin parallel strips set edgewise on its upper face and extending in the direction of flow of the liquid so that the liquid cascades off the baffle in a continuous unbroken sheet. In the form shown, the washer consists of a casing 1 having its lower part formed as a tank 2 for the washing liquid, whilst the upper part contains two series of inclined baffles 5 mounted in vertically spaced, overlapping relation. Each baffle consists of a flat metal plate with an upwardly curved edge, several parallel strips 6 of thin metal being set on edge on its upper surface. Washing liquid flows from a supply pipe 7 and nozzle 7a into the channel between each pair of adjoining strips at a sufficient rate to ensure that the sheet of liquid leaving the edge of the baffle is continuous and unbroken and retains this character for most of its travel to the next baffle. The gas to be cleaned is admitted to the casing through a downwardly inclined duct 8 and first bubbles through the liquid in the tank, passing under a baffle 9 depending from the lowermost baffle 5. The gas then flows upwardly through the liquid curtains, any liquid entrained in the gas stream being removed by a filter consisting of a mesh 10 on which is supported a mass of Raschig rings.
