Abstract

563,688. Air cleaners. AC-SPHINX SPARKING PLUG CO., Ltd., BROWNE, D. B., and BUCKMAN, K. E. Feb. 19, 1943, No. 2757. [Class 8 (ii)] Dusty air flowing through an inlet passage 5 impinges on an oil &c. bath where it deposits dust and is moistened, and then passes up through a mass 3 of filter mesh material which traps the oil and dust. The oil flows back through the mass and falls into the bath, the reflux of oil is regularized by causing the flow of the uncleaned air prior to wetting to create a region of low pressure at the outer edge of the filter mass, e.g. by providing an annular deflector 7 around the bottom of the filter chamber 4, and making holes 4a in the lower edge of the chamber wall, which holes are shielded from the air flow by the deflector. In place of a deflector ring, separate deflector tongues may be formed by piercing the lower wall of the chamber, the tongues being bent outwardly and so forming the holes. In a modification, the inlet passage is formed with a venturi throat adjacent the holes to create the low-pressure region.
