Abstract

1,072,418. Crimping. AMP Inc. Oct. 5, 1965 [Oct. 9, 1964], No. 41362/64. Heading B3Q. A fluid pressure operated crimping tool includes a pair of pivoted crimping jaws 1, 2 operatively connected by a toggle linkage 5 to the piston of a cylinder 4, supply of pressure fluid to the piston being initiated by a foot pedal and being stopped automatically after the jaws have closed a predetermined amount. Operation of the foot pedal (28) (Fig. 3, not shown) first connects points F and G so that fluid from a supply (23) flows along lines (27) and (25) to a supply control valve (21). This shifts a spool in the valve to connect points (B) to (C) and (A) to (D) so that fluid flows along line (22) to a control cylinder (13), forcing a piston (11) downwardly to thus move the spool (9) of a supply valve (8) downwardly. The cylinder (4) is then supplied with fluid and crimping takes place. When the piston of the cylinder (4) has risen a predetermined distance, an adjustable stop (20) contacts a pilot piston (17) of a shut-off valve (15) to shut off the supply to the cylinder (4). The valve (15) connects lines (14) and (16) so that the pressure in line (22) is directed through line (16) to a line (24), thereby shifting the spool of valve (21) to its original position in which points A and E are connected and line (16) vented. The piston (11) rises under its spring-loading to permit spool (9) to rise also, the cylinder (4) being vented and the crimping jaws opening. Operation of the pedal (28) will restart the cycle.
