Abstract

768,725. Dielectric heating. WEST LANCASHIRE RADIO & TELEVISION LABORATORIES, Ltd., VICARS, Ltd., T. & T., and RADIO HEATERS, Ltd. Aug. 16, 1955 [Sept. 6, 1954], No. 25816/54. Class 39(3) A radio-frequency dielectric heating oven through which articles or pieces to be heated are passed on a conveyer band 3 has a screening hood 11 of a material having good electrical conducting properties, e.g. aluminium, copper or brass, the hood providing a path for space currents which would otherwise produce wasteful heat in the steel framework of the oven. Electrodes 8, 9 are connected to a generator 17 by conductors 18, 19 and are suspended by insulators 10 from the hood which is movable vertically by means of a hand wheel 16 for rotating pinions 14 engaging racks provided on four spindles 12. The power fed into the oven is controlled by moving the hood and electrodes towards or away from the band 3 which passes over a non-magnetic sheet 5 of stainless steel. Blocks 21 of silicon glass insulate the spindles from the hood which is thus insulated from the rest of the oven. The hood may be formed of a single sheet of metal or built up from a number of sheets fixed together, e.g. by brazing, soldering, screwing or riveting. In an alternative construction the electrodes may be mounted in a fixed hood and the conveyer band made movable up and down. The oven may be used for baking edible material, foundry cores or ceramic articles, or for drying textiles, cardboard or powdered chemical substances.
