Abstract

798,756. Dielectric heating. RADIO HEATERS, Ltd. Aug. 23, 1956 [Oct. 17, 1955], No. 29548/55. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XIII] Dielectric heating apparatus for drying or baking comprises an oven through which passes a steel conveyer having mounted above it a number of pairs of electrodes. In the Figure, each electrode of the single pair of electrodes 4 is given the concave arcuate form shown at its outer end so as to compensate for uneven heating normally produced by rectangular shaped electrodes. Material passes under the greatest electrode length in that zone where it would otherwise be coolest, i.e. where the electrode is fed with R.F. power, and under the minimum length of electrode where it would otherwise be hottest. The electrodes are adjustable in height above a conveyer 6 and are connected by flexible strips 8 to a generator 10. The electrodes are mounted on supports (not shown) by means of insulators 12 and are provided with holes 14 for the escape of steam during heating of the material. The shaping of the electrodes as shown may be combined with known methods of increasing uniformity of heating, e.g. bending, or tilting of the electrodes from alternate sides of the conveyer, or from different positions on successive electrodes. Sausage rusks, silica powder, cube sugar, sponge rubber and saw-dust may be dried by the apparatus.
