Abstract
The invention comprises salicylic acid 4-sulphonamide, the N : N-di-(n-propyl)-, N : N-di-(n-butyl)-, N : N-dimethyl- and N-phenyl derivatives thereof and N : N1-bis-(3-hydroxy-4-carboxyphenylsulphonyl)-m- and -p-phenylene diamines; and the preparation of these compounds, the corresponding o-phenylene diamine compound and other N : N-dialkyl salicylic acid 4-sulphonamides, wherein the alkyl groups each contain 1-8 carbon atoms, by diazotizing 4-aminosalicylic acid, reacting the diazo compound formed with a solution of hydrogen chloride and sulphur dioxide in the presence of a catalytic amount of a copper salt and then reacting the resulting salicylic acid 4-sulphochloride with ammonia or an appropriate amine. Suitable solvents are water and/or organic solvents such as glacial acetic acid, and the diazotization may be effected in the hydrogen chloride-sulphur dioxide solution. Examples describe the preparation of each of the compounds referred to specifically above. Reference is also made to acylation and esterification of the compounds of the invention.
