Abstract
766,413. Anodizing tantalum; electrolytic capacitors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Jan. 24, 1955 [Jan. 25, 1954], No. 2092/55. Drawings to Specification. Classes 37 and 41. A method of forming a dielectric film on a tantalum capacitor electrode comprises subjecting the electrode to a forming voltage in an electrolytic bath, then to an oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. air, at a temperature of 200‹ to 500‹ C., and lastly to a forming voltage in an electrolytic bath. The temperatures of the baths are preferably equal and between 85‹ and 200‹ C., e.g. 100‹ C. Each electrolytic treatment may comprise a single-stage or a two-stage process. If a single-stage, the bath may comprise 12 per cent ammonium borate, 58 per cent ethylene glycol and 30 per cent triethanolamine by weight, the mixture being heated until the ammonium borate is dissolved and heating continued until 60 per cent by weight of the mixture has evaporated. If a two-stage process is used, the mixture in the first stage thereof may comprise (by weight) 5 to 15 per cent water, 10 to 25 per cent ammonium borate and the balance ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol, the bath for the second stage being that described above for the single-stage process.
