Abstract

An oxide film is formed on tantalum or niobium by anodization in a bath consisting of phosphoric acid in a glycol-water mixture, containing 25-90% by weight of glycol. The concentration of phosphoric acid is selected from the range 1.8-600 millimoles per kg. of glycol-water mixture to give an oxide coating at a forming voltage of 200 volts having low residual current and high sparking voltage. The oxide coated metal is used as an electrode in an electrolytic capacitor. Reference is made to a known process of anodizing tantalum or niobium in 10% phosphoric acid.
