Abstract

The superficial area of an aluminium strip, for use as an electrode in an electrolytic capacitor, is increased by annealing the strip, anodically oxidizing the surface of the annealed strip, e.g. in a 0.1 molar aqueous citric acid solution at a forming voltage of 15-75 volts, and chemically, e.g. using HCl solution, or electrochemically roughening the surface of the oxidized strip. The oxide layer may be strengthened by heating in water at above 75 DEG C. prior to roughening.
