Abstract

1,224,226. Electrolytic etching and oxidizing of aluminium foil or strip. ANO-COIL Ltd. Sept. 20, 1968 [Oct. 17, 1967], No.44823/68. Heading C7B. Aluminium foil or strip is electrolytically etched and then electrolytically oxidized in one continuous operation, at least one of the electrolytic treatments being carried out in an electrolyzer having two chambers and an alternating current electrode in each chamber, the foil or strip forming an intermediate conductor passing from one chamber to the other. As shown the strip 12 is passed in sequence through an electrolyzer 14 containing hydrochloric acid as electrolyte and in which the strip is etched using alternating current electrodes 32 and 34; a cleaning tank 40 containing sodium hydroxide; a second two-chamber electrolyzer 48 having alternating current electrodes 54, 56 and containing dilute sulphuric acid electrolyte, and a sealing tank 62 containing de-ionized water. At various points along the strip path, the strip passes through rinsing devices 38 and heating devices 46. Either the etching electrolyzer or the anodizing electrolyzer may be replaced by a direct current cell Figs.2 and 3, respectively, (not shown) the strip being connected to one pole of the current source by means of a contact roller, and a counterelectrode being suspended in the bath. Using a direct current electrolyzer for etching, hydrofluoric acid may be used as electrolyte. The process may include a step for colouring the foil or strip.
