The drive to the rib dial 14 is through an epicyclic gear train 62, 60, 58, 56 in which a yoke 68 carrying the planet gears 60, 58 is angularly movable by a cam on the main cam drum, to shog the dial with respect to the needle cylinder. During plain knitting and loop transfer with the yoke against stop 72, the dial needles, constituted by relatively slidable hook and cast-off members 16, 20, are over inactive cylinder needles 4<SP>11</SP>, and dial fins 15 are over plain sinkers 12. During rib knitting, however, the yoke is brought against stop 74, to shog the dial against the direction of rotation of the needle cylinder, until the dial needles 16, 20 are immediately in front of active cylinder needles 4<SP>1</SP> (in the direction of rotation of the needle cylinder) and the fins 15 are substantially over needles 41 as in Fig. 6. The dial needles are now further than the active cylinder needles 4<SP>1</SP> from sawtooth sinkers 6 therebetween and the needles 41 lead on the dial needles in loop drawing. The total effect of this relative disposition of parts is shown in Fig. 13, in which the sawtooth sinkers have engaged the so-called sinker wale bights 88<SP>1</SP> (instead of dial needle loops 80<SP>1</SP>, as in the normal layout) and enlarged them slightly (instead of the dial needle loops) whilst the dial needle loops 80<SP>1</SP> and cylinder needle loops 821 remain of approximately their original size. Since, however, when the fabric is relaxed, the sawtooth " sinker " loops stand approximately normally to the fabric faces, the cylinder needle loops are substantially in contact on one face of the fabric and the dial needle loops are similarly arranged on the other face; and elasticity is imparted to the fabric, on stretching, by distortion of the sawtooth sinker loops to directions more nearly parallel to the fabric faces. The relative positions of the knitting elements and the direction of shogging may be reversed, the dial needles knitting close to but behind active cylinder needles. The hook members 20 have outside cast-off points 22. The dial is automatically vertically movable, being raised in welt formation, lowered for rib knitting and raised again after loop transfer.
