Abstract

Marine engineering components for use in contact with sea-water or other saline waters, e.g. marine propellers and propeller accessories, are made of a high tensile brass which contains, or to which has been added, more than 4 per cent and preferably not more than 10 per cent by weight of iron, so as to produce on solidification an insoluble iron or iron-rich phase dispersed in a matrix of brass, the insoluble phase representing at least 5 per cent and not more than 10 per cent of the area of a prepared surface of the alloy. A preferred alloy for the components consists of: p .Cu.55 - 70.per cent .Sn.0 - 1.5.per cent .Mn.0.1 - 4.per cent .Al.0.1 - 6.per cent .Fe.more than 4 - 10.per cent .Zn and impurities the remainder...
