Abstract
760,372. Smoke and ventilation shaft arrangements. VAN DE POL'S HANDELSONDERNEMING N. V., E. M. Aug. 17, 1954, No. 23924/54. Classes 25 and 137 The arrangement of shafts provided in a building for the purpose of carrying off combustion gases or for ventilation comprises an upwardly extending main shaft and auxiliary shafts running in vertical direction and each connected at one end to the main shaft and the other end to a ventilation orifice or fire, wherein the vertical distance between the orifice by which the main shaft debouches into free air and the nearest connecting orifice between the said shaft and an auxiliary shaft is 12 feet or more. The smoke removal system shown (Fig. 1) comprises a main shaft 1 with auxiliary shafts 2, 3, 4 running parallel and adjacent to it. These shafts connect heating appliances 5, 6 and 7 to the main shaft whose upper part 6a is provided with a chimney cap 5a. The distance between orifice 13 connecting the auxiliary shaft 4 with the main shaft and the cap 5a must be 12 feet or more. In a modified system where the distance beween the cap 5a and the point of connection of the auxiliary shaft on the top floor of the building with the main shaft would be less than 12 feet no connection between the shafts is made the auxiliary shaft being carried out to the atmosphere as an independent one. In the ventilation system shown in Fig. 3 a main shaft 28 with associated auxiliary shafts 30, 31, 32, 33, provides fresh air to rooms on storeys 49, 50, 51, 52, 53 whilst foul air is removed from the rooms by a main shaft 29 with associated shafts 39, 40, 41, 42. As the vertical distance between orifices 34 and 55 and orifice 47 and the chimney cap is less than 12 feet both orifices, i.e. inlet orifice 34 and outlet orifice 47, are connected to the atmosphere by shafts independent of main shafts 28, 29, respectively.
