A combined crushing and mixing machine comprises a set of rotary tools 3 mounted within a vat 1 provided with a discharge spout 10, a jacket 8 the lower portion of which is of quadrilobate cross-section being mounted within the vat to provide an annular space 9 between it and the vat, which space communicates with the interior of the jacket both at the upper and lower edges of the jacket. The upper portion of the jacket is of circular cross-section, and the discharge spout 10 is closable by a cowl 11. The set of rotary tools 3 is in the form of three equi-angularly spaced knives which centrifuge the material, which may be mixed with water, and cause it to rise through the space 9. The vat has a removable cover 7.
