Abstract

<PICT:0637989/III/1> The agitator in a mixing or emulsifying machine comprises a propeller blade 16 secured to the lower end of a vertical shaft 7 and a helical arrangement of radial beater bars 29 secured to the shaft above the propeller. The propeller blade and beater bars are contained in a housing 13 having a tubular extension 21 for insertion into the liquid under treatment, the housing containing within its upper end a fixed perforated plate 26 through which liquid drawn in through the extension 21 is forced and thus expelled via the holes 17 in the side of the housing on to a baffle 18 which directs the liquid back into the main container. The beater bars 29 may be provided with holes, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown), through which the liquid may pass and a second perforated plate 31, Fig. 6 (not shown), may be carried by the shaft for rotation closely adjacent to the perforated plate 26. An additional propeller blade may be provided above the beater bars.
