757,552. Driving gear; crank cases. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO.. Ltd. April 7, 1955 [April 15, 1954], No. 11167/54. Class 7(2) In a multi-cylinder two-stroke engine comprising pairs 6, 6<SP>1</SP> and 7, 7<SP>1</SP> of opposed pistons, each pair operating in a common cylinder, a crankshaft 1 arranged between two parallel of cylinders, transverse beams 3, 3<SP>1</SP> pivoted 4, 4' at their centres in the crankcase 2 about axes parallel to and opposite sides of the crankshaft, the beams being linked at each end to one piston of the corresponding cylinder of the two banks and articulated to the small ends of the connecting rods 9, 9', the big ends being journalled on a common crankshaft-throw, the pistons in the cylinder of one bank are at inner dead-centre while those of the corresponding cylinder in the other bank are at outer dead-centre and vice versa whilst the crankshaft centre is obliquely offset from the centre of symmetry so that the exhaust ports 10, 11 are opened before the inlet ports 10', 11<SP>1</SP> by the pistons controlling them. The threepiece crankcase 2 which has access doors 16 in the lower position houses the two cylinder banks, only one cylinder 5 and 5<SP>1</SP> in each bank being shown; each cylinder may have a wet liner 14, 14<SP>1</SP>. The connecting points on thebeams for the rods 9, 91 are diagonally disposed.
