Abstract

An internal combustion engine comprises two working cylinders 10,11 arranged in vertical side-by- side parallel relationship, there being four oppositely working pistons 12,13,14,15 and the movement of the pistons being transmitted to a common drive shaft between the cylinders. Pistons 12,13 are connected to piston rods which are secured to a crosshead 26 which has a pivotal connection 30 for a connecting rod 29 the other end of which is connected to drive a crank shaft 28. The pistons 14,15 are connected through crosshead 27 to the drive shaft. Fuel injectors 24,25 are at the midpoint of each cylinder. There are intake ports 20,21 and exhaust ports 22,23. The angular spacing of the cranks on the crankshaft is such that the intake controlling pistons 12,13, lag behind the exhaust controlling pistons 14,15, in such a manner that the exhaust ports open prior to the opening of the intake ports and close prior to the closing of the intake ports. <IMAGE>
