Abstract

755,564. Hose reels; rotary pipe joints. SMITH, H. H. May 13, 1955 [May 21, 1954], No. 14990/54. Classes 99(1) and 99(2). A hose reel is rotatably mounted on a stationary hollow shaft 1 having a water inlet at one end 2 and at the other end 11 a rotatable cap 13 coupled to the hose reel, there being an outlet for water from the cap and for connection to a hose, a stuffing- box 16 and a gland 17 connected to and rotatable with the cap and axially movable in relation to the shaft 1. As shown, the shaft 1 is fitted to a hollow stationary part 3 provided with an inlet 4 connected to an inlet pipe 5, and four radial projections 6 secured to two L-shaped angle irons 8 for attaching the reel assembly to a wall. The cap 13 has an inward annular flange 14 and a water-receiving chamber 15 ; The cap also forms the stuffing box 16 which is closed by a collar 12 secured to the shaft. Resilient packing 18 in the stuffing-box is compressed by the gland 17 against a loose, metal, anti-friction. packing ring 19, the gland being secured to the cap 13 by bolts 20. A radially projecting boss 21 on the chamber 15 provides a socket for a curved outlet pipe to which is attached the end of the hose. The reel comprises cheeks 23, 25 connected together by spacing bolts 24 the cheek 23 being attached to the cap 13 and the cheek 25 being rotatable about the shaft 1. During operation, the pressure of the water on the wall of the cap 13 forces the cap outwardly and thereby causes the gland 17 to further compress the packing reel 18. A handle may be attached to the cap 13 or to the reel for rewinding the hose.
