Abstract
728,431. Pipe joints. MURRAY, W. Nov. 16, 1950 [Aug. 16, 1949], No. 21340/49. Class 99 (1). A rotary joint between a pipe and a rotary member such as a trunnion 15 of a roll of a paper-making machine comprises a rotary pipe 3 secured to the trunnion and mounted in a ball bearing 12 in a casing 1, a pipe secured at 4 to the casing, and a seal comprising a resilient bellows 7 secured to a collar 6 on the pipe 3 and carrying a sealing ring 8 in rubbing contact with a ring 9 secured in tne casing. The rotary pipe has a collar 13 with a wrench-engaging portion for screwing it into the trunnion. A stationary pipe 20 secured in the end of the casing extends through the pipe 3 into the rotary member and is curved so as to approach the wall of the rotary casing. Lubricant is fed through a spacer ring 11 between the ring 9 and bearing 12. An additional ball bearing may be provided. Alternatively, the bellows 7 may be secured to the ring 9, the sealing ring 8 bearing against the collar 6. In either case the resilience of the bellows may be reinforced by an external coil spring.
