Abstract
960,704. Rotary pipe joints. W. REIMERS. Sept. 29, 1960 [Oct. 1, 1959], No. 33423/60. Heading F2G. In a device for feeding pressure fluid from a stationary bearing cover 12 into a bore 9 in the end of a rotating shaft 3 and through a non- contacting sealing joint, the latter consists of two coaxial sealing elements the outer element 30 having a cylindrical bore receiving an inner cylindrical element 17 between which and the bore is formed a narrow annular sealing gap adapted to resist passage of the fluid. The bearing cover carries one sealing element and the shaft carries the other sealing element, and at least one of the elements is structurally separate from the carrier thereof and pivotably attached thereto with the aid of at least one elastically deformable sealing ring 20 permitting that element a limited rocking movement about a pivot point lying substantially in the plane of the sealing ring. As shown in Fig. 1, the shaft 3 is mounted by means of ball-bearing 10 in a housing 11 to which the cover 12 is secured, and the bore 9 of the shaft is enlarged to receive the tubular sealing element 17 in such manner that a narrow annular gap separates the inner wall of the bore and the outer surface of the element to form a non-contacting sealing joint; to increase the sealing effect, the outer surface of the element is provided with annular grooves 18 and the element is secured against rotation by a pin 19. Fluid pressure passes from the inlet 15 of the cover to the element 17 via a tubular sealing member 16 loosely inserted into the bores 14 of the cover and the bore of the sealing element, that member being provided with elastic sealing rings 20. In modifications (a) the sealing element 17 surrounds the shaft 3; (b) two or more pressure fluids are passed separately into the shaft 3, the element 17 having inlet bores which communicate with corresponding bores in the shaft and each of which accommodate a sealing member 16; (c) the sealing member 16c, Fig. 4, is pivotably suspended within the enlarged portion of the bore 9c by a sealing ring 20 and is secured against rotation by a pin 24, the element 17c being pressed fluidtight into the cover 12 or secured, as shown, by an elastic sealing ring 26; and (d) the sealing member 16d, Fig. 5, is pivotably suspended on the shaft 3 by an elastically deformable sealing ring 20 and engages the shaft by a sealing ring 20a, the sealing element 17d forming also the bearing cover.
