754,322. Centrifugal pumps. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Nov. 23, 1954 [Nov. 23, 1953], No. 33879/54. Class 110(1) In a multi-stage centrifugal compressor of single casing design, the first stage comprises an open-sided impeller, or the first stage and at least one of the immediately succeeding stages comprise open-sided impellers, and all the subsequent stages comprise shrouded impellers. The first stage, or each of the first two or more stages comprises an unshrouded impeller 5, while the subsequent stages each comprise an impeller 10 having a shroud 11 which is strengthened by a thick rib 12. Inlet guide vanes 3 may. be omitted, in which case the inlet ends of the impeller blades 4a of the first stage are shaped to admit the fluid with-' out shock. The impellers may be of somewhat conical form.
