Abstract
753,116. Internal shoe-drum brakes. KOTZ, F., [trading as BERGISCHE ACHSENFABRIK F. KOTZ & SOHNE]. July 16, 1952 [Dec. 6, 1951], No. 30113/54. Divided out of 753,012. Class 103 (1). In an internal shoe-drum brake, exaggerated or uncontrollable forces, which would normally be transferred from the trailing shoe 2 to the leading shoe 1, are prevented from being so transferred by means of an abutment member 16, having two supporting faces 17, 18, which is attached, by welding or the like, at right angles to the brake back-plate 10 (Fig. 2 being a section on C, D of Fig. 1); the plane of each face forming an angle α with the vertical axis through the brake. The front faces of the ribs 3, 4 of the brake shoes 1, 2 respectively are also correspondingly oblique and indicated by 20 and 19. When the brake is applied by means of the expanding arrangement 11 acting on the free ends 31, 4<SP>1</SP> of the ribs 3, 4, the shoes are spread against the action of the return springs 12, 13, 14, 15 and expanded against the brake drum (not shown) which rotates in the direction of the arrow 21. The brake drum tends to move the brake shoes in the rotative direction which movement is prevented by roller 5 being engaged with the abutment 8 of the adjustment device 7. When the transformation forces are too great, the abutment member 16 is effective and the front face 19 bears against the supporting face 17 so that uncontrollable forces are prevented from being transferred from the trailing shoe 2 to the leading shoe 1. The effective angle of the abutments 8 and 9 may also be at an angle α so that the brake shoes will be arranged centrally within the drum.
