Abstract
443,660. Drum brakes. BENDIX, Ltd., and ROBERTS, G. P., King's Road, Tyseley, Birmingham. Jan. 3, 1935, No. 184. [Class 103 (i)] The thrust of the primary shoe on the secondary shoe of a two-shoe self-energizing brake is transmitted through friction blocks or equivalent members so that this thrust is reduced. A pair of rods 5 rockably engaging the ends of the shoes 2, 3 respectively screw into sleeves 6 each having a conical head 7 abutting on the corresponding ends of four part-annular friction blocks 12 slidable in a fixed casing 8. Thus, when the brake is applied with the drum rotating in the direction of the arrow, the thrust of the shoe 2 is transmitted from one sleeve 6 to the other through the blocks 12 and as the blocks are forced radially against the casing 8 the thrust on the shoe 3 is proportionally reduced by the friction of the blocks in the casing. The sleeves 6 have a dog-clutch engagement 18 with each other so that by turning a pinion 17 on one sleeve both sleeves are turned to adjust the shoes. The position of the casing 8 on the back plate may also be adjustable. A device for centralizing the shoes comprises a pair of plates 14 normally held in contact with the casing by springs 15, 16, one or other of the plates being displaced by a shoulder on the adjacent head 7 when the brake is applied.
