Abstract
724,848. Internal shoe-drum brakes. PORSCHE, F. April 24, 1953 [June 21, 1952], No. 11329/53. ' Class 103 (1). A self-energizing internal shoe drum brake which is provided with freely suspended shoes supported on a two-arm intermediate member, the two arms of the said intermediate member forming an obtuse angle with each other, is characterized in that the intermediate member is provided with a third arm by means of which it is so articulated to the brake carrier plate that nearly half of. the supporting force transmitted from the primary shoe to the intermediate member is transmitted to the secondary shoe. The figure illustrates the invention applied to a motor vehicle in which a primary shoe I and a secondary shoe 2 are applied by means of an hydraulic brake cylinder 6, the lower ends of the brake shoes being supported by a two-arm intermediate member 7, the arms 8 and 9 of which form together an obtuse angle (150- 155 degrees) corresponding to direction of the forces exerted by the brake shoes; arm 9 being substantially parallel to the axis of the brake cylinder. The intermediate member 7 is provided with a third arm 10 which is pivotally mounted on the brake carrier plate 5 on a bolt 11. The force P1 introduced into the primary shoe 1 by the brake cylinder 6 presses the shoe against the revolving brake drum 12. This action presses the shoe 1 on the intermediate member 7 with a force P1<SP>1</SP>; which force is approximately three times the introduced force P1. In order to introduce the same braking effect to prevent unequal braking forces from being effected on both shoes, substantially the same force has to be introduced in the secondary shoe 2 as in the primary shoe 1. Hence P1<SP>1</SP> is split into two components P2 and Pa in which P2 is 30 per cent to 50 per cent of force P1<SP>1</SP>. The value and direction of the other component force Pa, which governs the point of articulations of the intermediate member to the brake carrier plate, follows from the parallelogram of forces.
