Abstract

497,096. Brakes. FARKAS, P. June 16, 1937, No. 16742. Convention date, June 17, 1936. [Class 103 (i)] In a vehicle brake of the kind in which the thrust of one shoe is transmitted to the other by adjustable members, the shoes anchoring at one end of one or other of them on a stationary abutment, according to the direction of drum rotation, the abutment has substantially radial faces which are engaged only by the edge of the lining carrying surface of the shoe. The shoes 1, 2 are applied by a floating cam 5 slidable in the rotatable operating member 49 and engaging rollers 22, 23 on the shoe ends. A pair of adjustable thrust-transmitting members each comprises two parts 27, 29 and 28, 30 arranged to be screwed one into or out of the other by a pinion on a transverse shaft engaging a pair of part-spherical pinions 33, 34 on the squared ends of the parts 29, 30. The parts 27, 28 are forked to engage the shoes and the parts 29, 30 are slidable in the pinions and the casing 35 and abut on each other. The casing is mounted on the back plate through which the squared end of the shaft extends. The stationary abutment 14 for the lower ends of the shoes has radial surfaces 39, 40 with which the edge of the lining carrying surface of the shoes engages. The edges of the shoes are thus free to move outwardly on the abutment surfaces as wear occurs. The shoes are slit at 57 to enable the arc of the shoes to flatten to correspond with the wear, the deformation being maintained by resilient washers on bolts 58 passing through the shoe web. A resilient connection 43 is provided in the cam-operating link 42 to compensate for relative movements between the axle and chassis of the vehicle. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a modification of the thrusttransmitting device in which each member comprises a single part, and the adjustment is effected by a wedge between the parts and carried by a rod freely mounted in a recess in a screwed rod. Also the thrust members may be in alignment instead of being inclined to each other. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
