Abstract

962,425. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. July 25, 1960 [April 25, 1959], No. 14199/59. Heading F2E. In a vehicle disc brake having friction pads 13 mounted in a stationary housing or caliper 10 straddling part of the disc 11, the friction pads 13 are supported against circumferential movement with the disc 11 by links 19 pivoted on pins 18 and extending between the friction pads 13 and anchorages, e.g. recesses 22 and abutments 23, on the caliper 10; on application of the brakes, the links 19 take the torque on the friction pads 13 while permitting them to move freely to and from the disc 11. The friction pads 13 are bonded to steel backing plates 14, one end of each of which forms a knuckle 17 hinged by the pin 18 to the link plate 19 of banjo outline to allow passage of operating piston 15 (not shown); link plates 19 are formed at one end with ribs 21 for engagement with the recesses 22 and abutments 23, and they diverge from the backing plates 14, as the friction pads 13 wear down, at an angle such as to produce a servo action when the disc 11 rotates in a direction placing the link plates 19 under compression, see Fig. 2. In a modification, Fig. 5, the caliper is open at one end and has complementary arms 32 at the other end, each arm being coupled by a pivoted link 43 to an extension lug 42 on each hydraulic piston 35 which is keyed to receive a spigot 38 on each backing plate 39 ; the pistons 35 have convex peripheral surfaces provided with sealing rings 36, so that they can rock. Specification 742,338 is referred to.
